| Sandy Hook Light dates to 1764 and is the oldest operating lighthouse in the United States.
Originally called the New York Lighthouse, it was built to aid mariners entering the Southern end of New York Harbor.
The lighthouse was built of rubble, about 500 feet from the tip of the Sandy Hook.
